Torrevieja is surrounded by two large and beautiful natural salt water lakes which form the "SALINAS DE
TORREVIEJA" and are an official Spanish Nature Reserve. These lakes attract a wide variety of bird life.
Torrevieja is a developing Tourist Centre and one of the most important on the Mediterranean Coast. However, you will find it is not nearly as commercialised as the Costa Blanca resorts to the North of
Alicante. It still retains that special "Spanish" feel and is an extremely relaxed environment.
The concentration of salt and the temperature, combine to endow this area with a particularly healthy micro-climate, recommended by doctors for its beneficial properties. Bathing in the salt lagoons is also becoming popular for many medicinal reasons. The climate in Torrevieja makes it an ideal location for year round holiday activities. Especially, if you want to fulfill that yearning for a round of golf during those dreary winter months in other parts of Europe. On average Torrevieja offers 340 days of sunshine per year and an average annual temperature of 18°C. Temperatures in the summer are typically 30°C.
Torrevieja and the surrounding district of Orihuela offer all the typical activities for the holiday maker. As you go through this website you'll get a flavour of what is on offer.
Go down to the marina and walk along the front. At lunch times and in the evenings this area and the surrounding streets are a hive of activity, with many busy cafes, restaurants and bars. The activity continues into the early hours. These streets also offer many shopping opportunities and an excellent indoor seafood market. There is also a marina daily street market where there are bargains to be had. Every Friday morning there is much larger Street Market in Torrevieja on Avenida de las
Habeneras.
Torrevieja is famous in Spain for it's many fiestas. The biggest being the Habaneras Festival in August. For forty years, every August, Torrevieja has held its traditional Competition of Habaneras and Polyphony, which now has an international character, since it is one of the greatest cultural celebrations in Europe. Voices from all over the world come together in
Torrevieja, and the Habanera sings its way out of the Competition precincts, and becomes the folklore of the locals. For a whole week, Torrevieja sways to the rhythm of the habanera, with its tropical flavour from Cuba. The competition awakes the interest of thousands of people throughout Spain, who experience it each year live in
Torrevieja.
The Villa has excellent local bowls clubs open all year
with excellent facilities including restaurants and swimming pools.

It
is impossible to talk about Torrevieja without talking about its beaches
with their fine sand and crystal clear waters, without doubt the most
frequented along the Mediterranean coast along with the town of Benidorm.
They have all held the European Blue Flag for Clean Seas for several
years, awarded for their quality and excellent installations. La Mata,
Los Locos, El Cura, El Acequión and Los Náufragos |
together
make up the beaches of the Torreviejan coast, not forgetting the
marvellous coves in the northern part, as well as the so-called natural
swimming pools which are found beside the Juan Aparicio promenade right
in the centre of the town. Of course the seaside promenades and the
fishing port are attractions in their own right for visitors to this
part of the Southern Mediterranean. The Torrevieja micro-climate,
brought about by the two salt lakes of La Mata and Torrevieja which
occupy more than 55 per cent of the total area of the town, |
|
|
with
its 340 days of sun and an average annual temperature of 20 degrees
centigrade, has meant that thousands of tourists from the north of Spain
and northern Europe have decided to set up home permanently in the town.
If you
still do not know this small corner of south east Spain there is still
time to do so, because the best thing of all are the local people,
traditionally friendly and open to both national and international
tourism. |

Food
Amongst
Torrevieja's many attractions as a Mediterranean tourist centre, is its
superb gastronomy, which nowadays combines traditional dishes with
"new cuisine", and which can be found in most of the town's
restaurants.
Fish
forms the basis of traditional Torrevieja cooking, along with vegetables
from the nearby irrigated regions of the Segura river "the market
garden of Europe", |
and
meats, especially pork, which is still made into delicious home made
sausages and cold meats in areas around the town.
The
most outstanding typical dish of Torrevieja is the "Caldero"
(fish stew) which normally consists of tasty cuts of fish called names
like: "the hen" (la gallina), "the cock" (el gallo),
"soft roe" (lecha), "spider" (araña), "red
mullet" (salmonetes) amongst others. |
|
|
The
juice from these fish, which are cooked in garlic, "ñora" and
tomato, is used as a base for a delicious rice which is served alongside
the stew. Other dishes which are considered indigenous to the area are
the huge variety of fish and rice dishes such as "arroz a banda",
octopus (de pulpo), tuna (de atún), and most outstandingly, rice with
peas (pésoles) and fresh anchovy which is prepared with tender garlic
and fresh artichokes. There is also a marvellous range of Torreviejan
appetisers, such as the "calamar de potera" |
and
grilled cuttlefish (sepia a la plancha), "pulpo ensangochao",
anchovies in vinegar (boquerones en vinagre) and onion blood.
The star
appetiser is dried octopus (pulpo seco), which is cooked over an open
fire after drying in the sun for several days, and is served with oil
and lemon (a must to try in the Bar El Pica) accompanied by a "paloma"
(aniseed liqueur, preferably "Candela" or "Tenis",
with water and ice). |
|
Visit the Bahia,
Miramar, Tamarindo restaurants, "Las Cañas" bar-restaurant and the
popular terraces which serve fried dishes and grilled sardines in the area
behind the Torrevieja casino.
Torrevieja presents a fine combination of tourist attractions and business
from its salt flats. Found here is the La Mata y Torrevieja Lagoon nature park,
a unique area in which the age-old tradition of salt mining has now successfully
been combined with concerns for conservation of local marshlands and nesting
sites for MIGRATORY birds, all in a highly attractive enclave The coast along
Torrevieja, with its seafront promenade, clean beaches,
and modern yacht club with a full range of services and tourist
installations, offers one of the most attractive tourist destinations along
the southern coast of the Land of Valencia

Situated on the Costa
Blanca approximately one hours drive South from Benidorm and 40 minutes
from Alicante airport, Torrevieja nestles between the Mediterranean sea
and two large salt lakes. A predominantly Spanish
holiday resort, Torrevieja has all the facilities you would expect yet still
retains a relaxing friendly atmosphere.
|
The Costa Blanca
literally means the white coast, the beaches in and around the Torrevieja
area prove this to be true. There are numerous sandy beaches
and coves to choose from. |
|
|
The beautifully restored old
church square is favourite meeting point for locals and tourists alike. |
Holiday makers take a dip in the
refreshing Fonts D Algarve just an hour from Torrevieja. This picturesque
area is close to Benidorm and the new Terra Mitica theme park. |
|
|
The imposing Nautica yacht club overlooks the
excellent marina.
|
Bathers
enjoy one of Torrievieja's two new sea pools, late in
September. |

The newly restored fountain
and mosaic seats in one of the town squares |
One
of the greatest tourist attractions of Torrevieja has always been its
variety of entertainment for young people. There are more than a hundred
night bars, the majority concentrated in the so-called El Baluarte area
in the La Punta district, which have become a major attraction for
thousands of people from all over the world. |
|
|
The
cosmopolitan nature of Torrevieja's nightlife can be seen in its leisure
areas: Casablanca, Bésame Mucho, Pata Palo, Tía Roqueta, Tirachinas,
Iris Pub, La Cantina or Correcaminos, are just some examples of typical
leisure places in the town. For the real nightbirds this provision is
rounded off by the macro-discoteque Pachá, as well as the historic Look
and KKO clubs, which cannot be passed over during a nocturnal pub-crawl
(la ruta del bakalao). |
During
the day Torrevieja also offers a range of leisure and entertainment
areas. As well as its beaches and numerous terraces along its maritime
promenade, its great aquatic park (Aquópolis) is swarming with
families, young people and children during the summer months. |
|
|
If you
prefer to contemplate and enjoy the Alicante coastline, there is no
better way than by going on a trip on the Tabardo cruisers equipped with
catamarans in which you can observe the sea bed. Excursions to the
island of Tabarca and trips all along the coast of southern Alicante
round off this interesting and unique tourist provision. |
Finally,
for the lovers of ecological and environmental tourism, you will not do
better than visit the lakes of La Mata and Torrevieja to enjoy a mudbath,
recommended by doctors around the world for its curative properties for
a large number of rheumatic dermatological, heart and respiratory
complaints. |

Torrevieja
The salt and the
sea are the inseparable elements which have marked the history and determined
the present-day reality of Torrevieja. At the beginning of the last century
there was only a watch-tower, the old tower and a few houses. In 1802 the La
Mata salt-flat offices moved to the present site, bringing about the rapid
urbanisation of the former Torrevieja. The proximity of the slat-flats and it
being an exporting port both of salt and the horticultural produce of La Vega
Baja led to the growth of port and town, which gained its independence from
Orihuela in 1820. Today it produces about a million tons of salt, mostly
exported, making it the prime European salt-producer. The International
Competition of Habaneras and Choirs, of International Tourist interest, is
held in homage to the people of Torrevieja who traded with Cuba, the former
Spanish colony and homeland of the Habaneras which the sailors sang on their
return. Salt and sea are the two inseparable elements that have marked the
history and determined the present-day circumstances of Torrevieja. At the
start of the 19th century in the town's current location there was only a
watchtower, an old tower and a handful of houses. In 1802 the administration
of the Mata salt-flats transferred to its current location and brought about
the rapid urbanization of Torrevieja. The proximity to the salt-flats and its
position as a port exporting salt, fruit and vegetables produced in the Vega
Baja of the Segura River resulted in the rapid development of the port and the
city. It gained its independence from Orihuela in 1820.Today it is one of the
leading European producers of salt, with approximately one million tonnes each
year, mainly for export. The International Habaneras and Choral Song
Competition, which has been declared to be of special interest to foreign
tourists, is held in honour of the inhabitants of Torrevieja who traded with
Cuba, a former Spanish colony and home to the Habaneras sung by the sailors on
their return. The lakes have been declared a Nature Reserve due to their
wetland ecosystem and for the ecological habitat they provide for migratory
and nesting birds. Modern day Torrevieja has other significant features
including the Modernist Casino and the Church of the Immaculate Conception
which are located in one of the commercial and residential areas of the town
respectively. In this area can also be found the monument to the Coralista and
the Museum of the Sea and of Salt, which explains the history of the sea and
of the salt industry which are representative of Torrevieja's past. Walks can
be taken to the fishing wharf and boat trips taken along Torrevieja's
coastline. There are several magnificent sandy beaches including Los Locos, El
Acequión, Los Náufragos, La Mata and El Cura. The southernmost beach, the Náufragos
beach, offers a range of amenities. The Cura beach is situated between the
Levante dock and the Punta Carral. Across from the Punta Carral is the Los
Locos beach. The longest and most northern beach is the la Mata from where
excursions can be made to the tourist vantage point of the Moro Tower, one of
the medieval towers that give Torrevieja its name.
